The former papal residence of Paul II Barbo, it became the National
Museum of Palazzo Venezia in 1921. Pope Paul II was an avid collector
and looked to the artistic future of this museum.
The National Museum of Palazzo di Venezia is housed in the grand
former residence of the Venetian pope Paul II Barbo (1464-1471),
an art lover and collector and "moral" initiator of
the future development of this museum. Established in 1921, it
has acquired a status as an important museum of the so-called
“applied arts”.
The National Museum of Palazzo di Venezia contains works of all
types and historical periods which make up the piano nobile of
the building: the rooms in the Cybo Apartment; the Passetto dei
Cardinali and all the historical rooms around the perimeter of
the Palazzotto San Marco. These contain: collections of paintings
on board and canvas dating from the XV-XVIII centuries, seventeenth
century pastels, as well as miniatures and fans; and a splendid
set of Italian and German wooden sculptures.
