The Capitoline collection was founded by Pope Sixtus IV with
the donation of the 4 famous bronze sculptures – the head
of Constantine, the she-wolf, the “Spinario”, or Boy
Extracting a Thorn from his Foot and the “Camillus”
– previously exhibited at the front of the Lateran. From
then on, works continued to be collected at the Campidoglio, leading
to the creation of the Capitoline museum complex. A plaque at
the entrance to the Palazzo dei Conservatori proudly mentions
the generous gift that Pope Sixtus IV gave to the City and people
of Rome.
The Capitoline Museums were opened again to the public after
a period of restoration and visitors are guaranteed an exceptional
tour: the Palazzo dei Conservatori, the Tabularium, the Palazzo
Caffarelli and Palazzo Nuovo make up the four sides of the Piazza
del Campidoglio designed and created by Michelangelo.
