The Roman Forum was originally a lively centre for conducting
business, a place for meeting friends and family, as well as the
main market area.
The Forum stretched from the Campidoglio to the Quirinal. The
area was then developed from 200 BC onwards with the construction
of government buildings and law courts. Caesar and Augustus established
the definitive configuration of the Roman Forum.
Excavation began around the nineteenth century to bring to light
those parts of the Forum that had been buried. There are many
monuments you can still admire in the Roman Forum, including:
the Senate House, the Basilica Aemilia, the Temple of Saturn,
the Temple of Vesta, the Temple of Caesar and the House of the
Vestals, which all date before Christ, and the Arch of Titus,
the Basilica of Maxentius and the Column of Phocas that date after
Christ.
